No more khatta-mitha, milestone change in my ties with Mamata govt: Governor

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Governor, remarked on Friday that the relationship between him and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in the state underwent a “sweet and sour” phase during the initial six months of his tenure, but there has been a significant positive change now. Addressing the media in Siliguri, Dhankhar expressed optimism about performing his constitutional duties without further hindrance.

He acknowledged the challenges in their relationship over the past six months, describing it as a “sweet and sour” experience on various occasions. Despite occasional dissatisfaction, Dhankhar emphasized his belief in the Indian Constitution and his duty to collaborate with the government, avoiding confrontation. He stated that his persistence has led to a “milestone change” and considers it a turning point.

The Governor revealed positive developments, noting that discussions with the state government on various concerns have commenced. He mentioned meetings with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chief Secretary, Finance Minister Amit Mitra, and Education Minister Partha Chatterjee. Dhankhar expressed hope that these discussions will continue, enabling him to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities.

Referring to his recent meeting with Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, the Governor highlighted productive discussions on the education scenario in the state, covering pending issues concerning universities.

In response to Dhankhar’s comments, Partha Chatterjee acknowledged the tradition of respecting the Governor’s post. He expressed readiness to cooperate, accept advice, and seek guidance within acceptable norms. Chatterjee clarified that they cannot accept advice that goes against established norms and rules, emphasizing their commitment to collaboration without indifference.

Dhankhar’s relationship with the government had faced challenges since he intervened in the incident involving Union minister Babul Supriyo at Jadavpur University. Despite his efforts to meet with the Chief Minister since December, the meeting only took place recently, indicating a positive shift in their interactions.
